Merchant's House Museum

This is the only 19th century home in New York City that has been preserved intact both inside and out. Once the home of a prosperous merchant family, stepping inside this row house (which has been a museum since 1936) offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the domestic life of wealthy New Yorkers from 1835-1865.

An Original Row House

Built in 1832, this restored landmark building is an example of a row house in its original form. It was occupied by the Tredwell family and their servants from 1835 to 1933. The home features a late Federal brick exterior and Greek Revival interior rooms with much of the original furniture and decor items. Visitors can also view the 19th century garden. The Merchant’s House Museum is a member of the Historic House Trust and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Personal Collection

Much of the home’s original furnishings, as well as many of the Tredwell’s personal possessions have been carefully preserved. There over 3,000 items including books, photographs and clothing. Highlights of the collection include mahogany chairs crafted by celebrated furniture maker Duncan Phyfe and dresses and accessories worn by the Tredwell women.

Visiting the Merchant's House Museum in New York City

This historic house is located at 29 East Fourth Street between Lafayette Street and Bowery. Both self-guided and guided tours are available. Groups over 10 must reserve in advance.
