The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World

Depending on what exhibits happen to be showing at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) visitors may get to explore ancient kingdoms in Africa, learn about the culture of Old Babylonian mathematics or discover the lost world of Old Europe. Admission is free to the galleries, which are located on the first floor of a historic six-storey Upper East Side limestone townhouse.

Part of New York University, the ISAW is a center for graduate studies and advanced scholarly research of the ancient old world from the Mediterranean to East Asia. Founded in 2006 by Shelby White and the Leon Levy Foundation, it features a free museum space with a rotating schedule of carefully curated exhibitions. The ISAW also hosts events and public lectures.
