The Jewish Museum

Founded in 1904, this institution is one of the world’s biggest and most important museums dedicated to Jewish art and culture. The Jewish Museum features a celebrated collection of over 27,000 items, with works on display ranging from ancient artifacts to cutting-edge contemporary art.

With its two-floor permanent exhibition Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey, the museum tells the story of the Jewish experience through a broad range of mediums such as prints, paintings, sculptures, art installations and broadcast media materials as well as through its regular schedule of temporary exhibits.

A Family Mansion Turned Museum

The Jewish Museum is situated within the elegant Warburg family mansion on Manhattan’s Museum Mile. For forty years, it was housed in the library of The Jewish Theological Seminary of America where it began with just 26 donated objects. In 1944, Frieda Schiff Warburg, widow of businessman and philanthropist Felix Warburg, donated their home to the Seminary for use as a museum.

A major expansion which was completed in 1993 doubled the gallery space of the museum. The French Gothic chateau-style exterior of the historic mansion was preserved in the renovation.

Visiting the Jewish Museum in New York City

The museum is located at 1109 Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It features a certified kosher cafe on the lower level designed by noted architect Kevin Roche. Tours are available weekdays and are free with admission.
