A trip to New York City is incomplete with out taking in at least one Broadway show. There are so many Broadway shows ranging from comedy, drama and musicals on offer; it is for this reason that we’ve put together a list of the top 5 New York Broadway theatre shows. The Lion King – This thrilling musical loved by children and adults alike brings the 1994 Disney movie to life. The Lion King tells the story of a young lion cub named Simba who struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role as king. This Broadway show won six Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, in 1998. Mamma Mia! – Set to the music of Swedish sensations, ABBA, Mama Mia! Tells the story of Sophie, a 20 year old girl, living on a Greek Island and about to marry. Never knowing the identity of her father Sophie snoops through her mothers diary finds the names of three likely candidates and invites them all to her wedding hoping to discover who her father is. This Broadway musical is a must for ABBA fans.

The Phantom of the Opera – We all know the story of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s acclaimed The Phantom of the Opera. It is in fact the longest running show on Broadway and has been seen by over 100 million people in 22 countries in 113 cities around the world since its first performance. If there is one Broadway show you need to see while you are in New York, this is it.

Chicago – Murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly find that making headlines pays off in this razzle-dazzle hit musical. This musical has enjoyed more popularity since the movie featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rene Zelwegger was released. Featuring hits like ??All that Jazz?? and ??Razzle Dazzle?? this toe tapping musical and winner of six Tony Awards in 1997 is sure to impress even the most discerning critics.

Rent – This awesome musical rock show tells the story of a group of New York City East Village artists struggling to find their voices and find love in today’s tough times and broaches controversial topics like AIDS and drug addiction with compassion. Now in its 10th year, Rent is a must see!
