Chelsea Piers

Chelsea Piers

Situated along Manhattan’s famous Hudson River, Chelsea Piers Sport and Entertainment Complex is one of the city’s most popular public recreation destinations. The complex is spread over 30-acres and incorporates four previously neglected historic warehouses that were transformed by a privately financed venture for a whopping $120-million.

Piers 59, 60, 61 and 62 make up Chelsea Piers and they are located between 17th and 23rd Street. The sports village is a must-see for any visitors to New York and remains a yearlong attraction to tourists and locals alike.

History

Chelsea Piers opened in 1910 and served as a docking location for luxury liners that came to America’s shores. Legendary ships visited Chelsea Piers, including the Mauretania and the Lusitania. It was a glorious location in its days and made a lasting impression on many who took their first steps on the country’s soil. However, as luxury liners became obsolete, the area became derelict and run down.

In the 1980s, Chelsea Piers was earmarked for demolition and plans were made for a highway to be built in its place. Fortunately, these plans fell through and in the early 1990s, Chelsea Piers Management was awarded the rights to operate a sports and entertainment facility on the site. Construction began in 1995 and today the complex houses some of the best facilities of its kind in the city.
