America's Oldest Department Store

Founded in 1826 by Samuel Lord and George Taylor, Lord & Taylor is the oldest department store in the U.S. The store boasts many firsts in retail history. L&T was the first store to set up shop on Fifth Avenue in 1914, setting the stage for the street to become one of the premier shopping destinations in the world. Other firsts include installing an elevator, opening a branch location in 1941, and in 1945 employing a woman president, Dorothy Shaver, who made a huge impact on American fashion by strongly promoting American designers in the upscale department store’s collections. Legendary American designers like Vera Maxwell got their start in the industry when their designs were showcased in L&T’s Fifth Avenue store windows.
