Kiehl's

Kiehl's

Kiehl’s is a luxury line of skin and hair care products made with naturally-sourced ingredients. There are many locations of Kiehl’s all over the world but the flagship store in Manhattan’s East Village dates back to the mid-19th century. The Kiehl’s sales associates who are decked out in spotless white lab coats are reminiscent of the store’s early history as an old-world pharmacy.

Beloved Products

From bestsellers like the lush body lotion Creme de Corps to the silky Lip Balm #1, Kiehl’s products attract a devoted following. The facial skincare line offers many solutions for dehydrated skin, wrinkles and acne and the body products feature scrubs, hand salves and self-tanners made with cocoa butter. Kiehl’s also offers shampoos, conditioners and styling products.

Some of Kiehl’s product formulations date back decades. Kiehl’s signature fragrance “Original Musk” first came out in 1963, and the Blue Astringent Herbal lotion (popular with men as an after-shave balm) was created in 1964.

Natural since 1851

Kiehl’s has expanded across the US and internationally but this retailer of premium skin products began as a single pharmacy in Manhattan’s East Village. Founded in 1851, Kiehl’s philosophy of using naturally-derived ingredients in their products evolved from its early years as a homeopathic apothecary.

To this day the flagship Kiehl’s store sits on the corner of 3rd Avenue and 13th Street in the same location as the original. Members of the Kiehl’s founding family were avid motorcycle riders and amassed a collection of bikes including Harley’s and Indians. These vintage motorcycles are showcased in Kiehl’s stores around the world.

Samples as Advertising

Kiehl’s diehards know one of the most fun things about going to Kiehl’s is snapping up all the samples. You don’t have to commit to a pricey cream you aren’t sure about; trial packets are scattered throughout the store and you can request a sample of a product you are curious about trying. This marketing technique has served Kiehl’s well over the years; it relied heavily on customers trying out the products and spreading the word rather than expensive advertising.
