Symphony Space

Symphony Space

This Upper West Side performing arts center features an exciting and innovative entertainment schedule that includes theatre, dance, concerts, film screenings and literary readings. Performances at Symphony Space are held in either the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre or the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater.

Music Marathons

A New York institution, Symphony Space was born in 1978 with a free marathon concert that took place on a chilly January evening. “Wall to Wall Bach” was a huge success with many waiting several hours in the cold to get in. The event made the national news and Symphony Space, once a tired building that had housed a public market, ice rink and boxing arena, became the cultural hub of the Upper West Side renaissance.

Many free music marathons would follow and they became a beloved signature event; Symphony Space holds a free “Wall to Wall” marathon every year.

New and Established Artists

Symphony Space prides itself on its eclectic performance schedule that showcases both emerging and well-known talent. From folk singers to gospel choirs to the popular Thalia film series, there is a show or event to suit everyone. A wide variety of family programs are also offered such as the Thalia Kids' Book Club.
