Tenement Museum

The Tenement Museum offers a fascinating insight into the lives of immigrants in New York City during the late 19th century and various parts of the 20th century. This organization has acquired two buildings on the Lower East Side that have been officially added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Both of the multi-level properties were once tenements that housed scores of new arrivals to NYC. Situated along Orchard Street, the buildings are simply identified by numerical identification. The original red brick facades, stairways, iron fire escapes and other architectural elements have been carefully preserved.

Features and Tours

Tenement Museum
Your trip to the Tenement Museum has to begin at the visitor's centre, which has multimedia exhibits, a gift shop and some office space. Tickets to guided group tours of the actual tenement buildings can be purchased at the visitor's centre. Some of the tours focus on the commercial aspects of 97 Orchard Street, which was home to several shops and other businesses that were operated by immigrants. For example, a German saloon and a Jewish butchery are featured on the first level of this building. The Sweatshop Workers Tour focuses on Jewish garment workers. The Hard Times tour takes you into the tenements that were occupied by Jewish and Italian families between the 1860's and the Great Depression. This excursion highlights the conflicts and friendships that formed when immigrants of different religions lived in such close quarters. In 2017, the Lower East Side opened a new exhibit space on the upper floors of 103 Orchard Street. The Under One Roof tour focuses on the lives of residents in the Lower East Side after World War II. You'll get the chance to learn about the rapidly changing demographics of the area due to economic and social factors. The Under One Roof presentation tells the stories of Puerto Rican and Chinese families. Additionally, you can learn about Jewish residents who were fortunate enough to escape from the Nazis and find refuge in NYC. Each guided tour at the Tenement Museum is led by a person in a costume, which usually reflects the appropriate time period. The guides often imitate the accents and dialects of all the immigrants who once lived in the Lower East Side. After visiting the tenements and the museum, you'll be highly influenced to explore some of the surrounding landmarks that expand the stories from the tours. For example, the historic Bialystoker Synagogue and Eldridge Street Synagogue highlight the huge impact that the Jewish population had on this part of Manhattan. Little Italy is also just a few blocks west of this museum.

Visiting Tenement Museum

The Tenement Museum is located at the corner of Orchard Street and Delancey Street in the Lower East Side neighbourhood of Manhattan. During their hey days, these historic streets supported an array of small businesses and street vendors. Located only three blocks away from the museum, the Essex Street Station is served by the F, J, M and Z lines of the New York City subway. These express trains primarily run through the eastern part of Manhattan. Other subway stations that are within walking distance of the museum include Grand Street and Bowery. There are also numerous Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus stops along Delancey Street, which merges with the Williamsburg Bridge. The Lower East Side is primarily a residential neighbourhood, so you won't find too many parking garages like in Midtown Manhattan. However, some garages are available in the neighbouring districts of Chinatown, Little Italy and the Bowery district. Originally established in the late 19th century to accommodate horse-drawn carriages and push-carts, many of the relatively narrow streets near the Tenement Museum now have a bicycle-friendly layout.
