Museum of Modern Art | Featuring more than 150,000 pieces of modern art

The Museum of Modern Art is New York City’s art museum located in midtown Manhattan between 5th and 6th Avenue on 53rd St. Featuring more than 150,000 pieces of modern art, the museum is home to thousands of film archives, and is locally known as the greatest museum of modern arts around the world.

It is one of the first museums in the world to have started its collection of film and photography. The film archive alone holds more than 20,000 films with upcoming films, ongoing productions and past archives. Included in the 150,000+ art collection is Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” and Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.

History and Structure of MoMA
Constructed in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art was construed by its director Alfred Barr Jr. and was the very first New York museum to put all its efforts towards modern arts. It opened its doors just 9 days after the stock market crashed with just 8 paintings. The structure was renovated in 2004 by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi. Doubling the exhibit space, the 640,000 square foot building is ten stories high featuring a sculpture garden, 150 seat auditorium and two filming theaters.

Wife of John D Rockefellar Jr, Abby Aldrich created the idea of the museum in 1928 along with dear friends Lillie Bliss and Mary Sullivan. Owing the biggest share to three successful women, the museum today has an instrumental development mission towards activists, curators, scholars, artists and patrons.

The mission of the museum as stated is to encourage the furnishing of popular instruction with the development with the study of Modern Arts. There are many programs focusing towards family and children.

Visiting the Museum of Modern Art
One can visit the museum any day of the week except for Tuesdays. Admission costs vary depending if you are a museum member and prices may vary depending on age. There are gift shops and three restaurants that include The Modern, Café 2 and the Terrace 5.

There are many tours available to enhance the visit such as free audio tours, gallery talks and private tours before and after hours. Visiting the museum with your kids is accommodated with unique programs and special amenities to make the most of the learning experience.

Since there are six floors of exhibits, it is best to keep a few tips in mind when planning your visit. Start at the top to see the extensive galleries. Checking your coat and bags is a free service offered. There are many movies offered if you want to take a break from the galleries. There is a full schedule of film and media viewings in the museum.

The museum is accessible by subway and bus. There is discounted parking available at nearby by parking areas. Hours of operation are dependent on the day of the week.
