October in New York City

by NYJ Team

October is consider one of those perfect months to visit the city – there’s the interesting happenings, the pre-holiday excitement, not to mention the great weather. The days are still warm enough to be comfortable, with average temperature highs at 65°F (18°C), with lows hitting 50°F (10°C). So usually the days are warm but the nights are cool so it’s best to bring a warm sweater or jacket for evening outside. Other items to bring comfortable, water-resistant walking shoes.

There is lots to see and do in New York in the month of October. To start with, the fall foliage in the parks are incredible. Central Park especially is the perfect place to enjoy the changing seasons and to enjoy the wonderful spectacles of nature. In addition, the crisp weather makes it the perfect time to take in some of those interesting walking tours that New York City is so famous for.

Other events include the Columbus Day Parade which falls on Monday, October 2nd this year. It begins at 11 am and takes place on Fifth Avenue. It celebrates the great growth and contributions of the Italian-American community.  There’s also Oktoberfest and is a festival of all things German! From lager and leiderhosen to bratwurst and pretzels, the annual Oktoberfest celebrations in New York recreate the lively party atmosphere that Munich’s beer festival is famous for. On various Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month of October, Manhattan’s Third Avenue becomes a pedestrian-only area to accommodate the music, dancing, and wide variety of German beers and delicious Deutschland foods.

We haven’t mentioned Halloween yet. There are lots of fun things to do in New York City on Halloween for kids of all ages. A favourite is the Halloween Extravaganza and Procession of the Ghouls. Attendees don their Halloween costumes for this annual tradition, which takes place at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
