For over 45 years, the New York Public Theater has been bringing the Bard’s classics to the general public in the form of ‘Shakespeare in the Park’. Every summer, over 80,000 visitors and locals alike are offered the opportunity to see some of the best productions in town – at no charge whatsoever. Over the years, some of the industry’s greatest actors and directors have been part of Shakespeare in the Park, including Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman and Jeff Goldblum. Eight million people in total have watched innumerable shows since the event was first introduced to New York’s rich cultural scene in 1964.
This summer, Shakespeare in the Park offered two of the most popular classics – ??Romeo and Juliet?? – which ran in June and July and ??Midsummer Night’s Dream?? which is running in August and until the 8th of September, 2007. ??Midsummer Night’s Dream?? is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, telling the story of four lovers who run from Athens and find themselves in a magical bind following a dramatic fight between the King and Queen of the Fairies, Oberon and Tatiana. Directed by Daniel Sullivan, this production will run from Tuesdays through to Sundays at 8 pm at the famous Delacorte Theater. With a cast of nearly 30 actors, this show promises to live up the excellent standard of previous productions of Shakespeare in the Park.
