Housing Works Bookstore Cafe

If you love the idea of shopping for used books, sipping a coffee and helping support a great cause at the same time, then head to the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe. Every dollar spent at this SoHo bookstore, cafe and event space supports Housing Works, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless people living with HIV and AIDS.

A Place to Read and Relax

The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is staffed mostly by volunteers and all the merchandise (which includes a selection of over 40,000 books, records and DVDs) is donated. Along with a great collection of used books and music, the cafe features a delectable menu of fair trade coffee and tea, beer, wine, and a selection of light fare including soups, quiches, sandwiches and desserts. Free WiFi is available with any purchase.

A Literary Hotspot

The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is a hub for New York’s literati and has hosted many events for the city’s literary community including book releases, lectures and parties for publishers. The Bookstore Cafe features a busy calendar of events including live musical entertainment and comedy shows, with the proceeds from tickets sales going to AIDS prevention, awareness and care for the homeless.

The Cafe also presents many special events that are free or cost just a nominal fee; examples include a panel discussion of Rolling Stone editors and journalists, readings by well-known writers and story readings for children.

An Event Venue for Book Lovers

With its 20-foot ceilings, spiral staircases and Corinthian columns, the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is a sought-after event space. Opened in 1998, this unique venue is available for rental and provides the perfect setting for literature-inspired weddings with its mahogany-paneled bookshelves and balconies.

About Housing Works

Housing Works is dedicated to ending homelessness and AIDS. It advocates for homeless people living with HIV and AIDS and works to raise awareness and funds to provide them with housing and high-quality services.

In 1990, members of the AIDS activist group ACT UP created Housing Works because they felt that stable housing was key to helping those afflicted with HIV and AIDS and stopping further spread of the virus. Since then it has provided housing and services such as job training to over 20,000 New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.
